Recommended Books & Guides
Purchase books from such noted authors as John Shaw, Authur Morris, Bruce Fraser, Tim Grey and Galen Rowell using my direct links to Amazon.com.John Shaw is one of Nikon's "Legends Behind the Lens" photographers. He is world reknowned for his images and his instructional books on photography techniques and running a successful nature photography business. He writes the most readable instruction books I have ever encountered. They provide excellent technical information in a language that any photographer can digest. He neither talks over the reader's head nor patronizes the reader. John also teaches photography workshops all over the world.
John Harrington has written the most comprehensive, current book on the business of photography. It is called "Best Business Practices for Photographers". In the book, he details the importance of using professional equipment, the contractual details that every photographer needs to know, how to register copyright, and what to do if your copyright is infringed. He also talks about managing a studio and staff, accounting, acquiring legal counsel, and balancing the demands of your photography business with home and family life. Of particular value are the numerous examples of contract negotiation e-mail exchanges between him and his own clients (with appropriate redacting).
Authur Morris is recognized the world over as the premiere bird photographer. His first edition of Birds as Art is on the shelf of many bird photographers. His second and much expanded edition of this amazing book is currently in production. Art's photographs have been published in numerous magazines and won many awards. See his web site for instructional workshop schedules.
Galen Rowell has been hailed as the world's greatest adventure photographer. Unfortunately, Galen left us in a small plane crash in 2002 while returning from a National Geographic assignment. His inspirational writings and images are still available through Amazon and other outlets. A new book, "Galen Rowell: A Retrospective", will be available from his Mountain Light studio in the fall of 2006 and will include articles and over 200 images spanning this magnificent photographer's career.
Bruce Fraser has written numerous books on color management and editing tools for photographers. His books on using Adobe Camera Raw and Adobe Photoshop are the best I have ever read. They are informative, thorough and deep in knowledge. Bruce not only provides steps-by-step instructions for how to accomplish various tasks in Camera Raw and Photoshop, but also provides insight into what is happening behind the scenes with these tools. He tells you how they "think", which is enormously valuable in helping you decide which technique is best to apply to any given situation.
